Internationalization

Internationalization (i18n) is a service which includes creating and modifying a computer application so as to make it easier to adapt it to use in many different languages without introducing further changes to the code of this application. Internationalization prepares an application for localization and usually takes place before the localization process. Without initial internationalization, software localization is much more expensive, time-consuming, and often impossible.

Software intended for localization must meet several requirements. These include:

arrowAn encoding standard which enables a correct display of non-ANSI characters, e.g. Unicode, must be supported.
arrowInterface layout must allow for entering longer text.
arrowAn executable code must be separated from an onscreen text code, e.g. by putting it in separate DLLs.
arrowInformation about the used code pages must be included in help source files, e.g. by including meta headers in HTML files.
